The Smart URL is a special link Heyo assigns your campaign when you first publish. It’s “smart” because it can detect what kind of device the user has when they click on it and direct them to the appropriate version of the campaign.
The Smart URL is initially given to you in the congratulatory pop-up (pictured above) when you publish your campaign and you can always find it listed just beneath the title of your campaign on the Heyo dashboard (pictured below).
When you publish, Heyo automatically creates three versions of your campaign:
So, as an example, when I publish the “Garth’s Mother’s Day” campaign pictured above, Heyo gives me this smart URL —> http://s.heyo.com/578c55
When someone clicks on that smart URL they will be directed to one of three URLs listed below:
As you can see, each version has it’s own unique URL, but you don’t have to worry about that because Heyo rolls them all into the Smart URL and automatically sends the user to the appropriate version.
Users who click the Smart URL from a desktop/laptop will be directed to the Facebook version of the campaign. If they click from a mobile device, such as a smart phone or tablet, they’ll be directed to the mobile version.
The web version serves as an alternative to the Facebook version; it’s for those who wish to run their campaign outside of Facebook and it’s also a great backup if Facebook experiences any problems. The web version can also be used to iFrame your campaign onto a website; option 2 in this article explains that further.
If you do need to control which versions of the campaign get published, you can turn them on and off by checking/unchecking the “Publish to…” boxes on your campaign preview page. This might come in handy if you don’t want your campaign hosted on Facebook.
The smart URL is your key to promotion – put it in front of your audience wherever they are. If you’d like some additional tips on what to do after publishing, check out this article on the publishing process.
There are a few common mistakes that can lead a mobile user to a non-mobile optimized campaign, or cause issues with the Smart URL. These include:
Promoting the Facebook URL: This is the most common mistake users make. The Facebook URL will not work for mobile users because Facebook does not provide a mobile version of their apps/tabs section. Heyo fixes this by creating a mobile version for you and it’s only available through the Smart URL. Be sure to use the Smart URL wherever you promote so that mobile users are not left out!
“Publish to” boxes are unchecked: This is less common but does occur from time to time. If you publish without any of these boxes checked, your campaign will appear as a Heyo sign up page. If you publish with “publish to mobile” unchecked, your campaign will not work on mobile, and so on for each version. Ensure that the versions you want published are checked.
